| Our cleanup efforts are moving forward at a better pace since we have
lighting below decks.
Thanks to Jim Bartlett and Joe Milakovich (Gold Crew) the engine overhaul for the #2 generator will start soon. On March 22nd we received a donation of 1100 linear feet of new fire hose. All fire hose aboard needs replacing. We have two people who have a close relationship with the AMERAX Company who manufactures fire extinguishers. We are hoping for a donation of twenty extinguishers. We sent our wish list to the Ingalls Shipbuilding Company and they are searching their surplus inventory for items we need. We would be very happy if someone would donate a few cases of 120-130 volt light bulbs. Remember, the Blue Crew works for the Gold Crew and for all the old LST sailors that come aboard. | March 9th was a great day for the Blue Crew. We closed the breaker
on our recently acquired DC rectifier and the ship's DC lighting circuits
came alive for the first time since we have been at Chickasaw.
For you non electricians, our shore power is AC and is not compatible with the ship's DC circuits so we are required to convert AC power to DC power. We found this old rectifier in a field in Gulf Shores, Alabama. This old WW2 equipment was donated to the ship by David Walter of Gulf Shores. This rectifier was for years exposed to the elements and we did not expect to make it work. George Manley and Ed Brown (Blue Crew Electricians), our highly qualified electricians, worked very hard to bring the old relic back to life. Now we can work below decks without flashlights. Chief Electrician Don Chapman (Gold Crew) reports that he has placed a build order for a DC converter. This converter will supply the ship with 240 volt DC power. This will enable us to operate all of the electrical equipment on the ship when it has been installed. Jim Bartlett and Joe Milakovich (Gold Crew) have been onboard this week doing some important engine room work. Capt. Bob Jornlin, Harold Slemmons and Ron Maranto (Gold Crew) were here for a couple of days doing some important work meeting with the shipyard to get the ship into dry docks. The Blue Crew really appreciates the visits from members of the Gold Crew. The guys that brought her back know more about this ship than anyone else and they are all outstanding human beings. Cleaning and repairing is progressing at a better pace since we have lighting. Much of the crew's time is spent escorting visitors about the ship. Most visitors are allowed on main deck only (safety reasons). Old LST sailors (that have good legs) can go where they damn well please. We average about 50 or 60 visitors each day, mostly from out of town. BLUE CREW EARL STONE
